It is with great pride that we launch this inaugural issue of the Saudi Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences (SJMMS); the official scientific publication of the University of Dammam. The goal of this journal is to provide and sustain an environment of ethical research and discovery.
This journal emanates from the University of Dammam, an institution with a long record of research and publishing. The biomedical journal will be a great challenge, but it is our hope that with the hard work of the editorial board and staff, an exemplary standard will be established and maintained comparable to the standard of internationally recognized journals.
The establishment of the journal has the support and encouragement of His Excellency The President and Vice President for Higher Studies and Scientific Research. Though fully funded by the university and considered part of its strategic plan for academic excellence, it is self-governed by the editorial board with the guidance of an international advisory board of renowned researchers from around the world. These two bodies will ensure commitment to ethical principles of the Committee of Publication Ethics (COPE). Our reviewers will ensure that the publication guidelines of International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) are complied with.
The aim of the journal is to promote scholarly publications in medicine and medical sciences that have the potential for practical application. We expect to attract submissions from authors particularly from Saudi Arabia, the Gulf States and the Middle East and also from the rest of the world. It is envisaged that this broad spectrum of articles will attract a readership of all medical and health professionals in institutions in the Middle East as well as other parts of the world. It is also our hope that researchers, health practitioners, and students both undergraduate and postgraduate will find the journal, which will be in print and on-line, an interesting source of information that they will convert into knowledge. We went open-access from the beginning to increase visibility and we comply with international open access policies.
We will depend on a rigorous double-blind peer review to maintain a high standard by selecting articles for publication that make genuine contribution to science in their originality and authenticity.
It is our hope that the Saudi Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences would be an invaluable means of encouraging research and improving the knowledge and professional skills and redefining the self-learning capacity of health professionals.
We certainly welcome our readers' and researchers' comments and support not only by submitting their research work but also by making suggestions that may improve the Journal. A feedback from our readers would motivate us to maintain the high quality of the Journal.
