It is my pleasure to contribute this editorial on the launching of the first issue of the first volume of the Saudi Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences (SJMMS). I consider this an important event in the history and progressive course of the University of Dammam. As a university, we have a heritage of nearly 40 years in sound research and publishing. Over this time, we have had a large number of eminent faculty from all over the world and a growing number of Saudi faculty in all medical specialties. They all contributed to scholarly publishing.

The SJMMS is more than a forum or venue for publishing research results. It is an important educational tool for faculty and students alike and a role model in medical and scientific writing. The SJMMS represents an entry into a new era for the University of Dammam in publishing. It is a step toward launching the University Publication Center which is currently underway. I hope that the SJMMS will set the standard for future journals of the University.

The Journal derives its name from the Colleges of the Health Professions Cluster in the University of Dammam. These are the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Applied Medical Sciences and two more colleges to come; Clinical Pharmacy and Public Health.

A high standard journal is integral and complimentary to the University of Dammam as a "professional university." A professional university is an institution focused on teaching, research, and service for dedicated professions. It fosters and produces action-oriented research through scientific enquiry to translate results to problem-solving means. Being a professional university, the University of Dammam considers resources allocated to the journal an investment to achieve the goals of its strategic plan. The new journal would serve and help fulfilling the vision and mission of the University. It also complies with its stated values. The vision of the University explicitly refers to "a pioneering professional university that shall be a prime source of ethical and applicable research." The SJMMS is committed to ethical research and follow the guidelines relevant to that.

The birth of the SJMMS is aligned with the mission of the university which states: "The University of Dammam is committed to sustain an environment of scientific research and discovery that creates new knowledge and opportunities for an improved quality of life." In their endeavor to establish and maintain a high standard journal, the editorial team is indeed consolidating the values of the University: "We value an environment of professional excellence and quality, innovation, creativity, research and intellectual curiosity within ethical bounds."

A journal's standard and quality is predominantly the challenge for its editorial team. The University Administration was keen to have the new journal run by a competent team. Both Editors-in-Chief have prior experience in medical and scientific editorship. The Editorial Board is made up of senior professors who are well versed in research and publishing. They represent all the Colleges of the Health Professions Cluster in the University of Dammam. They wisely selected distinguished and renowned local and international professors for the Advisory Board of the Journal. The copublisher of the Journal - Wolters-Kluwer/Medknow - is an internationally recognized publishing house.

I believe that the SJMMS has taken off to a successful course under a collective competent leadership. Their biggest challenge is to excel in an environment of tough competition. They have to keep up a high standard and strive to develop an innovative publishing model for the Kingdom, Gulf Cooperative Council (GCC) countries, East Mediterranean Region of WHO (EMRO) and the world at large.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the editorial team for their achievement. I am grateful that they have put considerable time and effort to set the stage for a quality journal and for producing the first issue on time. They will always have the University's full support.
